The expansion of the Brown University Division of Applied Mathematics is located on the edge of the historic campus, adjacent to a well-established residential neighborhood. The building and landscape serve as a transition between the scale of the neighborhood and that of the University, incorporating materials and details that reflect both influences. The site design creates a campus lawn, connecting the building to the larger University open space network, and also provides smaller-scaled garden rooms that act as a counterpart to the building’s interior functions, where faculty, staff, and students can meet, socialize, or simply think.

This project served as the initial phase of a larger University effort to expand its facilities in this corner of the campus, part of a larger area Master Planning effort, including a new School of Engineering building. Constructed as a design-build project, the building and site were designed and completed in 16 months.
