Located on newly constructed ground designed to protect Lagos from rising sea levels, the consulate’s site is part of a larger development that seeks to be a model of resiliency in a chaotic and rapidly growing urban environment. The consulate’s landscape design makes a significant contribution to the resiliency plan by providing a series of lush green rooms spiraling to a central “green lung,” creating an oasis that offers respite and calm to the embassy community.

The landscape design arranges the site so water and wind move through it naturally, acknowledging the possibility of extreme seasonal conditions. Sculptural trees and a diverse palette of plants create microclimates, within a context of multi-layered gardens. Regional traditions of pattern making and weaving common in Nigerian culture inspire the overlapping and dense planting textures of these gardens.
