Pike-Pine Renaissance Streetscape Design Vision

The Downtown Seattle Association engaged GGN to create a detailed plan of phased, opportunistic streetscape improvements to refresh the city’s downtown core. GGN responded by proposing a consistent return to historic sidewalk standards – tweaked to strengthen the contrast between avenues and streets – along with a bold prioritization of pedestrians at intersections. GGN also proposed a “Market to Market” concept to connect the core streets of Pike and Pine from the Pike Place Market to Melrose Market.

GGN’s approach to this project was to avoid “fancy paving” and quickly-dated custom elements that have characterized streetscape improvement districts in the past. Instead, GGN proposed a rediscovery of the simple, urban street standards that create the elegant, timeless base for ever-changing street life and installations. Seattle’s grand, leafy Avenues are made more tailored and green; rugged, irregular Hill Streets are made more textured and open to views between water and hills.
