Rackspace Headquarters: Racker Square

Rackspace Headquarters: Racker Square

Racker Square is the new outdoor heart of the headquarters of the cloud computing company, Rackspace. In 2007 Rackspace purchased an abandoned shopping mall complex just outside of San Antonio, TX, and has been "the Castle" into office space with mixed-use amenities. Racker Square is reclaimed from the existing mall parking lot.

The design of Racker Square merges the urban order of the traditional Texas town square with the relaxed informality of the Texas ice house and dance hall. A new central pavilion and lawn provide larger multi-functional spaces for programmed and impromptu events. Salvaged live oak trees wrap the space and provide shade for picnic tables and barbecue grills. Newly established streets frame the square and offer small group meeting spaces. These curbless streets are lined with small decks and garden spaces designed for lunch activity and meetings.
